    Germany won that battle, they lost fewer men and ships.

    It's just crazy that Pearl Harbor to Midway was exactly-ish 6 months, with Guam, Wake Island, Hong Kong, the Philippines conquest, ABDACOM's calamities in Java Sea & everywhere else, the collapse of Indonesian, Malayan, & Singaporean defenses, Burma, Doolittle, the raid on Ceylon, the raid on Sydney Harbor, & Coral Sea all taking place in that stretch (not to mention offensives in China). It's also mind-boggling how much could've been changed if the US Navy spent just a teeny bit more pre-War to test their torpedoes with warheads so that they would've actually worked when launched from subs, ships, & aircraft..

    Why were the US carriers not in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack? Because FDR knew the Japanese were going to attack Pearl Harbor. It wasn't a "surprise" attack. FDR sacrificed several of our battleships and over 3500 men to make the excuse for America to engage in war.

    They forgot to mention after the first attack on the Yorktown, the fire control crews did such a good job that on the next wave of attacks the Japanese thought it was an entirely different carrier and attacked it again.

    Hitler always planned to invade the Soviet Union/Russia. He believed Germany's destiny was to conquer most of Russia, west of the Urals. The war in the west was to him a sideshow that he tried to avoid. Barbarossa was a mistake in terms of the outcome for Germany but it was not a mistake in the sense that it was already the intention. Hitler even documented this intention in the 20s in his book, which makes Stalin look a bit of a fool for agreeing to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact in the first place.

    When you try and take away civilians democracy, that they have experienced verses living under Stalin, you've already lost. Those Ukrainian's have heart and are fighting to protect that. The Russian's are simply there for a paycheck wondering why they are even there in the first place.

    The Focke Wolf 190 has a possible claim as best fighter aircraft of world war 2 though there is such competition for that title . I remember Galland’s memoirs when, promoted to General, he did a few “unnofficial” operations flying a Fw 190 though he is known so much for flying a Me109

    Rather than calling Midway the turning point, I'd call it the beginning of the turning point as the meat grinder that was the Solomons campaign would see Japan put on the defensive for the rest of the war. But without Midway, it doesn't happen.

    For a different angle on this event, there are a couple of videos out there that depict the battle of Midway from the Japanese perspective. What they knew, when they knew it, and how the dynamic nature of the attacks cause decision making that ultimately was their undoing. It does a good job of creating the "fog of war" and lack of information the Japanese commanders had.

    It wasn't a waste. it took Italy out of the war. Germany and the rump Italian fascists surrendered at the end. And it pushed the Axis forces back, and provided respite to ease the USSR. So it was a success on all fronts. It's possible, though unlikely, that Stalin might have signed a peace with Hitler had the UK/USA not agreed to a new front. And following the victory in North Afica and subduring somewhat Germany in the Atlanic battle, it was opportune to continue the progress and push the Axis back further.

    Before the Yorktown was abandoned, the ship was hit by a Japanese attack; however the damage control teams was was able to get the ship back in the battle. After the main action of the battle they almost salvaged the Yorktown, and were in the process of towing the ship; however a Japanese submarine was able to sneak pass the destroyers and finished the Yorktown off, and sunk the destroyer towing the Yorktown. (Which I believe were the only two American ships lost during the battle)

    Controversial? ANY Allied campaign in which the Americans were not given absolute primacy of command and logistics and 100% of the credit for any success (with the Empire & Commonwealth taking all of the blame for any setbacks) was 'controversial'. No? Try Burma where Stilwell commanded no troops at all except the minimalist 'Merrill's Marauders' and yet made such a fuss about everything with his raging hatred of the Brits and the Chinese - that Mountbatten and Chiang had to quietly arrange to be shipped Stateside in a strait-jacket. That was 'controversial', too.

    The crucial moment was decison by McClusky (commanding Enterprise dive bombers) to turn to north to seek for IJN carriers, on the proverbial hunch. Had he followed his flight path as ordered, he would have to turn back to carriers not finding any targets, and Akagi and Kaga would have survived. Then it would be Nagumo's turn to strike, and with 3 full carrier airwings he likely would sink not only Yorktown, but Enterprise and Hornet as well. This would turn the battle into reverse result, with US losing all carriers and IJN only one (Yorktown dive bombers still would get Soryu).

  • @calvinnickel9995
    @calvinnickel9995 День назад

    The carriers weren’t sunk. Well.. I think one of them were. Most were scuttled. The problem was they were total losses and salvage would have been too dangerous. Much like USS Hornet later that year which the USN unsuccessfully tried to scuttle.. leaving it to the Japanese to finish off. Compare them to USS Franklin and USS Bunker Hill. By the end of the war US naval superiority was so absolute it was easy repair them and tow them back to the USA.
